Adding insulation to your attic is a moderately difficult do-it-yourself (DIY) project and will save you money on your energy bills. It’s important to have a good understanding of the materials, safety procedures and installation process to make sure your DIY project goes well.
Before starting, new construction insulation any existing insulation in the attic and vacuum the area thoroughly. Also, inspect the attic for any critters and pests that may have taken up residence in your attic and clean up these areas to prevent them from chewing through wires or damaging the insulation.
Fiberglass, rock and slag wool batt residential insulation are common forms of attic insulation. They come in different R-values and thicknesses and are pre-cut to standard lengths. They can be purchased plain or with kraft paper or other types of vapor retarder facings. They can also be purchased in tabled batts, which have stapling flanges for installing on wall cavities, or friction fit batts that will stay in place without fasteners until the walls are finished.

If you have a knee wall in your attic, you should install an insulated baffle to keep the new loose fill insulation from blowing onto the ceiling drywall. You should also put a barrier in place around fixtures, vents and recessed can lights to protect them from heat generated by the insulation. Also, it’s a good idea to install arc-fault GFCI circuit breakers, as electrical insulation can increase the risk of fire.
