While many legitimate reasons exist for using a proxy, criminals exploit these features to conceal their activities, making it difficult for websites to determine whether a visitor is human or automated. To combat this, proxy detection intelligence analyzes several critical attributes of an internet connection to determine if it is a proxy or VPN and assesses the threat level.
Various types of proxies exist, including forward proxies that present the actual IP address of the user to websites, transparent proxies that hide the original address but allow web traffic to pass through, and residential proxies that use real residential IP addresses. The resulting analysis can help determine which proxies to block. Advanced systems employ Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) to go beyond the simple HTTP header and examine traffic at a granular level. These include assessing the latency between the server and the IP, looking for encrypted traffic patterns that indicate tunneling protocols such as OpenVPN or IPSec, and more.
Other indicators of proxy or VPN usage can be detected by evaluating behavioral traits. For instance, if users access a website multiple times and with high speed, this may signal they are using a proxy to mask their activity. CAPTCHA challenges can also be used to test whether traffic is a human or a bot by prompting the user to perform a task that bots have trouble with, such as completing a math equation.
